Hosted by EIC Mikael Angelo Francisco, Ask Theory shines the spotlight on Pinoy scientific brilliance, in a fun and entertaining “kwentuhan” format. Each episode of Ask Theory features a Pinoy scientist from one of the various scientific disciplines. In a very casual conversation, guests explain what they do in simple terms, as well as share their fascinating stories: how they got into science, the challenges they face, what motivates them to pursue their fields, what future scientists from the Philippines can look forward to, and so much more.
Episode 15: Bakit Kailangan Nating Seryosohin Ang Mental Health?
In the eyes of other nations, our ability to smile through anything is matched only by our penchant for hospitality. Heck, the most popular fast food chicken in the country even has “joy” in its name. Thus, it’s a bit unsettling to know that we slid down by 9 ranks in the 2021 World Happiness Report. Aside from its impact on society and public health, COVID-19 took a heavy toll on our minds and emotions—and if we don’t address these issues, they can be just as dangerous as any grave disease or injury we can visualize.
Our guest on today’s show is Dr. Trina de la Llana, a consultation-liaison psychiatrist who practices online as part of the Mindcare Club and the Quezon City General Hospital, and onsite at The Medical City and the Philippine General Hospital. She completed her residency training in Psychiatry at UP-PGH, with a subspecialty in psychiatry in the medically ill. She is also interested in sexual and gender minority health, as well as school mental health.
We talked about how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected our mental health, misconceptions about mental health in the Philippines, why we need to take mental health issues as seriously as any other illness, some tips to improve our mental wellbeing, and more.
