The Science and Technology Information Institute (STII) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) concluded the first run of its Science Communication Advocacy and Library Education Upskilling Program (SCALEUP) on September 11-12, 2024, at Dr. Arcadio Santos National High School.

Thirty Grade 10 students participated in the two-day workshop titled “Lights, Camera, Rolling: A Creative Workshop on Video Production.” The workshop equipped students with essential skills in video production, including scriptwriting, production shooting, and video editing. By the end of the session, participants proudly showcased their 1–2-minute video outputs, demonstrating their newfound skills.

“As a student journalist, I am thankful to DOST, because I learned other formats of script writing, and how to properly include other details in it,” shared Mary Jane B. Sagayno, one of the workshop participants.

Ms. Jozell B. Monte, School Paper Adviser, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to DOST-STII for this initiative, which she believes is a great help to the students. “We are in a public school, and some of our students cannot afford capacity building and training. However, DOSTv offers these services for free, which is a tremendous help. They won’t need to worry about financial constraints because you are there, ready to provide opportunities to develop their skills in science communication.”

Meanwhile, SCALEUP Technical Working Group Lead Focal, Ms. Arlene E. Centeno, highlighted the importance of SCALEUP in building a strong foundation for science communication and media skills among young Filipinos. “This workshop is more than just about lights and cameras—it’s about your ability to make complex ideas accessible, engaging, and impactful. Your creativity, combined with the knowledge you’ve gained, will allow you to share important messages that can spark curiosity and encourage positive change in your communities.”

SCALEUP aims to offer free comprehensive training and human resource development services in the fields of information, science communication, and library science and management. This initiative aligns with DOST-STII’s mandate to undertake training on science and technology information.—Press release from DOST-STII/MF
