Science and technology play major roles in our everyday lives–sometimes, in ways that we’re not even aware of. And as we move closer towards a new, worldwide technological revolution, the importance of conducting and applying scientific research cannot be overstated.

With the theme “Enabling Technologies for Sustainable Development,” the 2019 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) will take place at the World Trade Center in Pasay City on July 17 to 21. This year’s celebration will continue the annual NSTW tradition of showcasing the impact of science and technology in the Philippines.

NSTW 2019 will highlight how the various agencies of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) are utilizing science and technology in the country to address the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations. Attendees will witness Pinoy science in action, as a series of exhibits by the DOST’s agencies will demonstrate how the department’s programs are supporting the SDGs through research, policy implementation, and funding.

Led by DOST-NCR, the DOST’s Regional Offices (RO) will set up and supervise the following for NSTW attendees:

•A Gamezone area with interactive activities for kids
•An Innovation Lounge to provide a venue for sharing of innovation best practices, training series, and technical consultancies
•A Wellness Garden to introduce the vertical helophyte technology used in water filtration
•A Souvenir Shoppe by OneStore, where visitors can buy souvenir items produced by DOST beneficiaries

In addition, the RO exhibits will shine the spotlight on three goals in particular.

No Poverty (SDG 1)

The No Poverty exhibit will feature the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) program. Developed with the aim of alleviating poverty and promoting livelihood in rural communities, the CEST program includes S&T interventions in health and nutrition, water and sanitation, basic education and literacy, livelihood and economic enterprise development, disaster risk reduction, and climate change adaptation.

This is what CEST can do in a small barangay in Jaro, Leyte. A bountiful harvest.

Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8)

Meanwhile, the Decent Work and Economic Growth exhibit will highlight how micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) have become SMARTER (Socially Responsive, Market-Oriented, Agile, Resource-Efficient, Technology-Intensive, Environment Friendly, and Resilient) via the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) 2.0.

Why we celebrate NSTW

The NSTW is an annual celebration, held in accordance with Proclamation No. 169 of 1993. Occuring every third week of July, the NSTW promotes science and technology advocacies in the Philippines, while drawing much-deserved attention to how science and technology contribute to national development.

The NSTW will be open from 1PM to 6PM on July 17, and 8AM to 6PM on July 18 to 21. Admission is free. For pre-registration and additional details on exhibits, discussions, and other activities, you may visit nstw.dost.gov.ph.
