FlipFact of the Day: Seahorses, pipefishes, seadragons, and other members of the Syngnathidae fish family are unique in the animal kingdom. Male syngnathids possess brood pouches, which function as their uteri. During the reproductive process, the female syngnathid deposits eggs in the male’s pouch; male seahorses in particular can carry up to 2,000 eggs at a time. Depending on the species, the pregnancy may last from 15 to 25 days. The eggs hatch in the father’s pouch, and after some time, the young (called “fry”) are released into the sea.
Today’s Science History Milestone: On July 25, 1920, English physical chemist Rosalind Franklin was born. Her extensive and independent work on DNA led to unlocking the secrets of its form; sadly, she never received the recognition she deserved throughout her lifetime.
